Harmonic sculpture & arrangement curves

Eight additive partials. Fundamental is anchored; the other seven evolve and learn a spectral target. These partials sound through “Living harmonics”.

Falling Empire’s three-point arc becomes bar-level density, breath, space and width automation. These are genes, not the protected master gain.

04 / THE MEMORY OF THE GARDEN

Keep what matters.

Current-generation champions, hall elites, rotating ancestors, favorites and diversity representatives are protected from learning and mutation when carried forward.

05 / A HYBRID SEARCH, NOT A BLACK BOX

Learn. Explore. Listen.

The search controller learns which mutation families improve craft. The diversity atlas protects alternative solutions; your comparisons train a small preference model.

No preferences taught yet. Your ears get a vote.
What the learner actually optimizes

Neural gradients optimize an explicit motif-and-chord teaching loss, not perceived beauty. Spectral descent fits eight harmonic amplitudes. Coordinate search checks generated notes; symbolic craft and novelty drive population selection. No gradients pass through quantized scores, imported synthesizers, or your speakers. Audio is rendered only for listening or export.

FIELD NOTES / 02

An orchestra that learns to grow.

Start with Step or Evolve garden. Each organism owns a variable neural network, a harmonic grammar, an arrangement, and eight instrument assignments. Four source engines are compiled into this single offline page.

Listen deliberately

Lower device volume, then press Audition. Sound is rendered to a buffer first; only that selected piece plays. Evolution never turns audio on or switches a playing piece. Silence / Escape cancels queued playback and disconnects the live output. The page starts at −26 dB attenuation with a maximum −16 dBFS sample bound. This cannot measure or guarantee headphone or speaker SPL.

Steer, don’t surrender

Change the instrument rack, form, donor style, rhythm or effects. Every edit creates a new saved variation; the original stays intact. Turn on Edit notes to plant or remove notes directly. Compare two organisms and vote: a pairwise preference model learns your choices. That model affects selection, not an objective definition of good music.

Three kinds of learning

Memetic combines topology/weight evolution, analytical neural gradients, spectral fitting, small score-level refinement, diversity preservation, and adaptive mutation choice. Evolution only skips gradient and local refinement. Gradient refinement only copies existing candidates and trains them without crossover, mutation or random additions. Protected candidates stay unchanged.

Archives & editing

Hall of fame is evaluated within the current challenge. Every-generation records retain their original configuration. Rotating ancestral representatives—not an ever-growing simultaneous population—return to competition. A stored score is still a heuristic. Favorites retain your own choices. New objective settings create a new challenge epoch.

Portable output

WAV contains the actual guarded synthesis. MIDI contains editable notes on eight role tracks plus a conductor track, with approximate General MIDI program hints. External MIDI instruments do not inherit this page’s volume protection. Fractional pitches are preserved in audio and Score JSON, but rounded in MIDI. Save garden preserves genetic history, exact RNG state, innovations, archives, and taste weights. Original Garden v1 JSON checkpoints can be imported with instrument settings derived from the saved musical parameters.

Sources & honest boundaries

PhonkMachine contributes actual cowbells, 808, regional drums, ancient leads, drones, stacks, effects and phrase conductors. Falling Empire contributes its actual Web Audio voices, drum hosts, Euclidean patterns and composer curves. Magnus contributes its stock and physical voices and legacy phrase generators. Their separate UIs, every old prototype, external sample libraries and Magnus’s full alternate mastery interface are not reproduced. The registry lists only adapted, renderable tools.

Native Web Audio graphs are rendered offline, joined to the sample-domain engines, and passed through one finite-sample check, filtering, bounded master, and capped output. A browser without workers falls back to cooperative computation. A browser without OfflineAudioContext cannot use Empire voices. PhonkMachine, Falling Empire, Magnus and this garden are all the same author's work, licensed together with the site that hosts them.
